Our Commitment to Design

Tolv collaborates with some of the most relevant designers of today. Together, we explore new behaviours and patterns of urban lifestyles to find solutions for simple and stylish living.

Tolv upholds the Scandinavian ideals of well-made, well-designed furniture, yet has an appreciation of diverse cultures and an international outlook. For our global customers, we call on designers from across the world to create original furniture based on their expert sensibilities.

“It is very much a back-and-forth collaboration, where the designer, in their role as 'creative artist', brings the vision”

Everyone's talking about Sculptural furniture

What does sculptural furniture really mean?

Everyone is talking about sculptural furniture, but what does it actually mean? And how sculptural should furniture be when it still needs to deliver lasting quality, comfort, and style?

In a time defined by ubiquitous AI and increasing automation, sculptural furniture has risen to the forefront of contemporary design. People are increasingly drawn to pieces that reflect the handwriting of human designers and craftspeople, objects that carry intention, meaning, and a sense of origin.

This shift is not simply about aesthetics. It reflects a wider desire for authenticity in the spaces we live in.

The need for balance

At Tolv, we understand that sculptural furniture must strike a careful balance. A balance between detail and simplicity, between form and purpose.
When a piece leans too far into art-like expression, it can risk prioritising impact over comfort and longevity. Likewise, an over-reliance on statement design can leave a space feeling cold or uninviting, something to be looked at rather than lived with.

The most enduring pieces sit between these extremes. They are considered, functional, and expressive without compromising on everyday use.

Design with intention

The designers who define Tolv have always worked within this balance.

The Tolv collection features distinctive pieces that follow Scandinavian principles of minimalism and practicality, while embracing organic forms and inviting materials. Each design clearly reflects the designer’s intentions, translated into objects that feel both resolved and approachable.

Crafted through process

Owning our own factory means we are able to oversee every step of production and involve designers directly in the making process. This close collaboration ensures that even the most subtle details are carefully realised.

Our pieces are handcrafted, allowing character and nuance to emerge in a way that machines alone cannot achieve.

A considered approach

Danish-owned since its establishment in 2014, Tolv remains uncompromising in these values. Our designers from across the world respond to their own lived experiences while also considering the needs of everyday life.

The result is a collection of furniture that is carefully considered, meaningfully designed, and made to be lived with.

Tolv pieces bridge the gap between expressive design and the everyday, bringing sculptural form into real spaces without losing comfort, warmth, or function.

Case study

The Poise chair by Patryk Koca  - from conception to completion

Our factory is set up to engage with designs that involve a high degree of manual skills and time-consuming procedures, placing us at the intersection of craftsmanship and mass production.

“The term ‘good design’ probably means different things to different people.”

We believe that a good design achieves the most with the least. It feels resolved and natural—free from gimmicks, forced details, or unnecessary flourishes. It does what it’s meant to do, with logic and ease.

Often, it looks effortless—though that usually takes a lot of effort. The proportions sit right, the materials make sense, and nothing feels overworked or trying too hard to be different.

We don’t follow a checklist. In the end, we choose what feels right to us. But when we look at the designs we’ve selected over time, these are the qualities they tend to share.

This Earth Day, create mindful moments in calm, practical spaces shaped by pieces designed to last.

Earth Day, held on April 22 each year, is a reminder to reflect on our impact on the planet and the small, considered choices we can make to improve it. It is not only about large-scale change, but also about how we choose to live, consume, and surround ourselves every day.

Living with intention

At Tolv, we design furniture for life as it is actually lived. The name Tolv, meaning “twelve” in Danish, reflects this idea of around-the-clock living. Our pieces are created to support daily routines, quiet moments, gatherings, and everything in between.

Grounded in Scandinavian principles of functionality, minimalism, and longevity, the collection is made to live with you through every season and stage of life. These are objects intended to be used, not just observed.

Choosing fewer, better pieces

When shaping a home, there is value in slowing down the decision-making process. Instead of filling a space quickly, consider investing in fewer pieces that carry real purpose and endure over time, both in quality and in style.

Sustainable living is not defined by perfection, but by intention. By choosing well-made, lasting furniture, you reduce the need for constant replacement and create a home that evolves rather than accumulates.

A considered approach to design

Tolv exists within a mindset of restraint and intention. Our furniture is designed to balance practicality with longevity, offering pieces that remain relevant well beyond the moment they are made.

Rather than following short-lived trends, we focus on proportion, material honesty, and craftsmanship that support long-term use.

The result is furniture that earns its place, quietly becoming part of everyday life.

Sustainability

We take a world-view on environmental issues and believe in sourcing and treating the raw materials we use with respect and care. Tolv is committed to producing responsibly and fairly, for everything we make and everyone that works for us.

Our sofa frames are constructed from German beech and New Zealand pine, both of which are recognised for their structural integrity.

Our tables, chairs and cabinets are crafted from solid American oak and solid American walnut. All of our solid oak is sourced from FSC-certified sustainable suppliers.
